VIDEO: A History of Cinema's Leather-Bound Lady Cyber-terrorist
As the obstructing contraption worn by Difficulties within the Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo most certainly bear observing, a couple of people are a bit more preoccupied with how Rooney Mara’s character, Lisbeth Salander, falls using the styles of cinema’s best-known female computer cyber-terrorist. Hint: Pretty much! In the team that condensed all Alicia Silverstone’s Unaware clothes to 1 mind-melting minute, find below a minute chronicling the leather-leaning sartorial habits from the ladies in Cyber-terrorist, The Matrix, Buffy the Vampire Slayer not to mention now’s Dragon Tattoo. You will find men in here, too (Tom Cruise = not too leatherlike), but yawn. I won’t hand out its ending, except to express that youthful Julia Stiles were built with a callous style her own which makes Salander look absolutely docile in comparison. Enjoy! Trailer: Sacha Baron Cohen's Dictator May Have the Bomb
What is it with Hollywood trailers this week? Men in Black 3 looked like more like a mass grave than a summer confection, Rock of Ages drowned in music to grocery-shop to, and now the first look at Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator boldly takes on that most subversive and risky of subjects: Muslim despots of the Middle East. You know — the decadent self-parodies being overthrown, dragged out into the street and executed because they are so incredibly relevant in the 21st century! Oh, and Megan Fox. And the Kardashians. Sigh. Click through for your pick of low-hanging fruit. Also: Is this Ben Kingsley’s Norbit? Enh, don’t answer that. [via Huffington Post]

Warner Music CEO Comments on EMI Auction
Thursday marks the 21-year anniversary of the death of John Lennon.our editor recommendsPaul McCartney Says Beatles Split All on John Lennon'Idol' Meets the Beatles With Mixed Results, MeltdownsPaul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Sir George Martin, Olivia Harrison to Attend Fifth Anniversary Show of Beatles' 'LOVE' John Lennon's Tooth Fetches Over $30,000 at Auction, Goes to Dentist The legendary singer-songwriter was shot and killed Dec. 8, 1980, at age 40 in NY by Mark David Chapman at the entrance to the building where he lived. His death came just three weeks after the release of his album Double Fantasy, which marked the first album for Lennon since the birth of his son in 1975. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths Lennon was born Oct. 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England. His first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into what became the Beatles in 1960. He and fellow band member Paul McCartney would go on to form one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century, writing most of the group's hits. Lennon's marriage to Japanese artist Yoko Ono in 1969 played a part in the disintegration of the Beatles a decade after the band's formation. He went on to have a successful solo career, with hits including "Mother," "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine." VIDEO: Remembering the Beatles' George Harrison Here are five iconic moments from Lennon's career: 1. Beatles' First Appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show The U.K. had already been enthralled with Beatlemania when the group made its U.S. debut appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, performing "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to an audience full of mostly screaming females. As they performed "Till There Was There," the names of the group members were superimposed over close-ups, including the famous "Sorry girls, he's married" over Lennon. The appearance marked their breakthrough to international stardom. 2. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band The Beatles' 1967 album was part of the group's experimental phase and spawned such singles as the title track, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "A Day in the Life." It was named one of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" by Rolling Stone in 2003. The Bee Gees -- Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb -- starred in a 1978 film musical of the same name that featured new versions of songs from the album as well as 1969's Abbey Road. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" also was featured in the Beatle's Yellow Submarine movie. 3. "Imagine" After embarking on his solo career, Lennon had several hits, including this one, which endures today and is a staple on TV singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice. Lennon and Ono performed the song -- which in 2004 was ranked No. 3 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" -- together in Madison Square Garden in 1972. 4. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" Lennon would became an anti-war activist, reflected in songs like "Give Peace a Chance," his first solo single, and the holiday-themed "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," which still gets lots of play every December. To advertise the single, Lennon and Ono paid for billboards in 12 cities around the world that read in each country's native language: "WAR IS OVER-IF YOU WANT IT." Watch the official video below. 5. Last Full Concert Performance Lennon gave two benefit concerts in NY's Madison Square Garden in 1972 to aid patients at the Willowbrook State School mental facility. They were has last full-length concert appearances. In the clip below, he performs "Mother." PHOTO GALLERY: View Gallery Hollywood's Notable Deaths Related Topics Yoko Ono The Beatles John Lennon

Joseph Farrell, Hollywood's Box-Office Prognosticator for a Quarter-Century, Dies
The actress Jessica Chastain has had as prolific a year as anyone in Hollywood. The demure 30-year-old red-head, who has been working professionally for the last few years but heretofore was virtually unknown, broke through in a major way by giving critically-hailed supporting performances no fewer than five films that came out within just months of each other.our editor recommendsGotham Awards 2011: 'Tree of Life,' 'Beginners' Tie for Best Feature"The Tree of Life" Appears to Be Rare Movie with a Cast Composed Entirely of Supporting ActorsFEINBERG FORECAST: 'Dragon Tattoo' and 'Extremely Loud' Last Contenders to Screen She played a soulful 1950s housewife in Fox Searchlight's The Tree of Life (5/27); a big-boobed blonde bimbo with a heart of gold in the 1960s south in Disney's The Help (8/10); a no-nonsense Israeli Mossad agent in Focus Features' The Debt (8/22); a working-class wife and mother whose husband begins to go off the rails in Sony Pictures Classics' Take Shelter (9/30); and the heartbroken spouse of the title character in The Weinstein Company's Coriolanus (12/2). PHOTOS: THR's Awards Season Roundtable Series 2011, The Actresses Because of the sheer number of 2011 films in which Chastain has done fine work, many in the industry feel that she is more than deserving of an Oscar nomination -- but also fear that she will be denied one. Why? Because when an actor is very good in even just two films, he or she runs the risk of splitting their base of support between the options and therefore winding up with too few votes to earn a nomination for either. When an actor is very good in five -- each of which is being pushed by a different studio -- it's hard to imagine that not happening. For a long time my assumption has been that a plurality of Chastain's votes will come for her work in The Help, which was the most widely seen of her films and the one in which she makes the greatest physical transformation, which voters always love. But my sources at several of the studios that are promoting her for other movies feel that her chances of securing a nod for that film, in particular, are hurt by the fact that her costar Octavia Spencer is a lock for a best supporting actress Oscar nod, as there usually is not enough room for more than one person from the same film in a single category. (Although, in the specific category in which Chastain and Spencer are competing, best supporting category, there has been in each of the past three years: see Doubt, Up in the Air, and The Fighter.) PHOTOS: Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Chastain Pose for 'THR' So, hypothetically, if The Help does not offer Chastain her best shot at a nod, which of her other four films does? I believe -- and Fox Searchlight is working hard to make everyone else believe -- that the answer is The Tree of Life. It's a film that has left audiences of the public and industry deeply divided -- it lacks a traditional narrative structure, so many find it meandering; but those who love it seem to really love it, especially Chastain's almost entirely silent performance as an ethereal, idealized mother whose children bring her great happiness and sorrow, as well as a lot of its below-the-line work, particularly Emmanuel Lubezki's gorgeous cinematography. In recent weeks, the film has started to re-enter the awards discussion in a big way, winning best feature at the Gotham Awards (in a tie with Beginners); being voted best actor for Brad Pitt (also for Moneyball), best supporting actress for Chastain (also for The Help and Take Shelter), and best cinematography for Lubezki by the NY Film Critics Circle; and earning a spot on the National Board of Review's list of the year's top 10 films. Consequently, Searchlight will be re-releasing the film this Friday at Laemmle's Music Hall in Beverly Hills (where it will have an exclusive week-long engagement) and will be circulating the featurette about Chastain that we are exclusively premiering at the top of this post (which intercuts Lubezki's beautiful footage of her in the film with testimonials about her from others -- including a great endorsement by Pitt -- as well as snippets of an interview with the actress herself), with the hope that they can be the studio that manages to beat the odds and get Chastain a well-deserved ticket to February's Academy Awards. As 2011 nears an end, Twitter compiled a list of the top topics on its website for the year.our editor recommends'Pretty Little Liars' Renewed for Third SeasonRosie O'Donnell's Engagement Ring for Michelle Rounds Gets a Close-Up on TwitterKeith Olbermann Will No Longer Engage With His Twitter Followers In television, ABC Family's mythology-heavy teen drama Pretty Little Liars was the No. 1 hot topic, according to the company, topping its ranking from the previous year when it ranked second. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Twitter Feuds That may come as a surprise since the hourlong drama, returning for the second half of its sophomore season in January, has hovered around the 3 million viewers mark thus far this season -- just a small percentage of the audience that tunes in to CBS juggernaut Two and a Half Men, which came in No. 2 this year with the help of Charlie Sheen's high-profile ouster and the casting of heavy Twitter user Ashton Kutcher. It's no surprise then that Sheen was Twitter's most-talked about actor for the year; Kutcher was eighth. Ricky Gervais was No. 4 following his controversial Golden Globes hosting stint at the beginning of the year and Tracy Morgan ranked sixth, most likely due to his homophobic rant. PHOTOS: Charlie Sheen's Wacky Twit Pics Lifetime telepic The Craigslist Killer followed Liars and Men as the third most-talked about TV event, with the Golden Globe Awards and People's Choice Awards at fourth and fifth, respectively. Craigslist Killer, based on the real-life story of med student/National Honor Society member Philip Markoff who was accused of killing a woman he found on Craigslist, drew 5.4 million viewers in January. On the film side, the four out of the five top topics of the year were genre films based on beloved characters. At the top of the list was Chris Hemsworth's summer blockbuster Thor, followed by the heavily-reported Batman threequel The Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale, X-Men: First Class, actioner Fast Five and the Seth Rogen superhero turn Green Hornet. PHOTOS: Ashton Kutcher's Career Through the Years Actresses like Mila Kunis, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lopez, Nina Dobrev and Emma Watson were all topped by Elizabeth Taylor, who died at the age of 79 in March. Rebecca Black and her song "Friday" dominated the social media site in music for the year. (Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" music video featured Black.) Nate Dogg followed in second and Britney Spears' Femme Fatale was No. 3. Interestingly, What the Trend? released the top 10 trending topics on Twitter and reported that Justin Bieber was No. 1, with Lady Gaga third, the Jonas Brothers fifth, South Korean boy band Super Junior at No. 7, Britney Spears eighth and a U.K. boy band One Direction at No. 10. In their list (data was compiled Nov. 30, 2010 to Dec. 1, 2011), Glee, Saturday Night Live, The Vampire Diaries and Jersey Shore were in the top five among U.S. television shows. Harry Potter took up two spots in movies, while Phineas & Ferb telepic topped Twilight. Switzerlands Copyright Law To Stay In Neutral, Surprising Anti-Piracy Groups
With various new group of the impact of unauthorized downloads, Europe seems being saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t do the repair.” The study, released with the Federal Department of Justice and Police, has found the final outcome that piracy doesn't have a bad economic impact on the nation and indicates the present legislation, which allows for copyrighted material being downloaded for individual use, is sufficient. Chris Marcich, leader in the Film Association, Europe, notifies me it’s an unpredicted and disappointing result. Within the analysis (simply with various year-old Nederlander study because the areas resemble), a federal council learned that around one-third of Swiss over the age of 15 download movies, music and games totally free which most don't separate downloads that are legal and people that are not. Most compelling for your authors in the study, however, appears being that clients of file-talking about sites continue being trading money on entertainment as well as the savings they realize by setting up free distribution are consequently being allotted to movie tickets and games. Because the council thinks it's specially the large foreign production companies that are suffering from — and will have to adapt to — new consumer habits, it doesn't believe these downloads might have a bad impact on Switzerlands own cultural output. Marcich states, “It’s troubling to enable them to apparently base their conclusion on that type of reasoning. The phenomenon affects all nations.” Local film and music producer Adriano Vigano may also be an attorney for your countrys anti-piracy association and notifies me: The Swiss government states it's not so worried about piracy because it only affects foreign rightsholders. Thats a hostile statement. Especially, he notes, since foreign films have about 95% business in Europe. Anti-piracy groups, people in politics and artists are mobilizing to obtain the government to collect more data, states Vigano.
WATCH: Fox News Accuses The Muppets of Brainwashing Children with Liberal Agenda
If this isn’t a good reason to go support The Muppets in its post-opening weekend theatrical run, I don’t know what is: Watch as a Fox News anchor and two right-wing pundit accuse Disney’s The Muppets of brainwashing children with its anti-capitalist message. Then rejoice as Professor Caroline Heldman of Occidental College drops science and keeps her cool in defense of the Muppets, President Obama, and reasonable thinking in general. It’s hard to choose the single most vile sound bite uttered by the trio of Follow the Money host Eric Bolling, The Five’s Andrea Tantaros, and the Media Research Center’s Dan Gainor, but my vote is with Bolling. “Maybe they should have a hungry Muppet — a Food Stamp Muppet — and the evil person be Obama!” he squawks. Heldman, a politics professor, is hilariously cut off by her preening host every time she delivers a reasoned smack down in defense of the film. Warning: Watching the video may lead to high blood pressure and numerous face palms. Muppets marketing team, here’s your next target. (Thanks to Media Matters via Next Movie for the heads up.)

Wrong Quentin Dupieux Trailer Online
The question is 'Why?'Anyone who's had the boggled pleasure of seeing Rubber, ought to be much excited at the news that Quentin Dupieux's follow-up Wrong is on its way to Sundance, heralded by this unsurprisingly bizarre teaser trailer.Rubber, you'll recall, was about a murderous, self-ambulatory, telepathic tyre. And Wrong? Well the official line is that it involves a man searching for his lost dog, encountering a pneumatic pizza-delivery girl, a jogging neighbour and a "mysterious righter of wrongs" en-route. Beyond that though, your guess is as good as ours. We're shown star Jack Plotnik opening the door to dog-detective Steve Little; a heartwarming photo of lost dog Paw; a yellow car racing across some salt flats; a grave being dug; a bald man stabbing someone with a lollipop; an office full of steam; a large man with a smaller dog; something approximating a car chase; a burning van; various people asking 'Why?'; and a burned-up William Fichter looking bad-ass and asking if he's... wrong. There's also a score to remind us that Dupieux's alter-ego is Mr. Oizo, and given the canine theme, it all looks appriopriately barking mad. The poster below has been unveiled on the official website, and you can check out some more stills at The Film Stage, including a whimsical one of Fichtner paddling his feet. There are no release dates or distribution deals so far, it seems, but the festival premiere is in January.
Watercooler: American Horror Story's Crowded House
American Horror Story It is a positive thing the Harmon's new crib is really spacious, since the damn place is filling fast! As you may know, should you die around the American Horror Story property, you remain on the home. Meaning the creepy cosmetic surgeon, his socialite wife, their Frankenstein baby, the house-intruders, the gay couple, Moira the 2-faced maid, school-shooter Tate, and crazy Hayden happen to be haunting the halls of Murder House. And last evening, two new permanent fittings were revealed, such as the well known Black Dahlia (who apparently perished as a result of a dirty dental professional in '47 - good detective work, Ryan Murphy!) and Constance's boy-toy lover, who left this mortal coil after major coitus with Ben's dead ex. That's a great deal of deadbeat squatters, and there is still three more days left prior to the finale. Who else will we think will finish up signing up for ranks? And most importantly, when the show does opt for the thought of a brand new family for next season, does which means that this crew will hang in there to torment them? We are thinking an exorcism is to be able to eliminate the host to its devils so another batch of baddies may take within the scares. Even though they are in internet marketing, it may be smart to give Vivien some spiritual cleansing, too. If that baby she's transporting is really the antichrist, nobody is gonna stand a ghost of the chance for the reason that house come season two. You know us, who should die prior to the finale? And perform the ghosts will need to go, or do you want to discover their whereabouts hang in there the coming year? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

The Hardest Oscar Category to Crack... Is Best Original Score?!
As most of us prepare to give thanks, some among us -- particularly young and up-and-coming film composers -- are saying please, as in, "Please Academy, give us a chance!"our editor recommendsFEINBERG FORECAST: 'The Artist,' 'The Descendants,' 'The Help' Atop Best Pic FieldTo Be An Oscars Winner, Dress Like One at the GlobesTHR Poll: Oscar Viewers Prefer Eddie Murphy Over Billy Crystal as Show Host Why? Because the Academy permits one individual to be nominated for more than one film in its best original score category -- unlike its acting categories, but like its directing and other technical categories -- and the Academy's music branch, which determines the category's nominees, has shown as much of a tendency as any branch to take advantage of that option. The result, over the last few decades, has been that veteran big-name composers have wound up with multiple nods on a fairly regular basis, while lesser-known emerging talent have struggled to get their moment in the sun. PHOTOS: Backstage at the 83rd Academy Awards This year could prove to be a tipping point for things, with a number of established veterans each in the running for multiple scores opposite a number of very worthy newcomers. John Williams, arguably the greatest living film composer -- he has scored an unbelievable 40 best original score nominations, nine of which have resulted in Oscars -- has both War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin in the running this year, and will almost surely be nominated for both. He alone has had two nods in one year on eight previous occasions that came in four different decades: 1969 (The Reivers and Goodbye, Mr. Chips), 1972 (Images and The Poseidon Adventure), 1977 (Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars), 1984 (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The River), 1987 (Empire of the Sun and The Witches of Eastwick), 1989 (Born on the Fourth of July and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), and 2001 (A.I.: Artifical Intelligence and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), and 2005 (Memoirs of a Geisha and Munich). Then, there's Alexandre Desplat, who has been nominated four times in the last five years (but has yet to win), who has churned out four major scores this year, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Ides of March, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and A Better Life; Howard Shore, who has been nominated and won twice in the past decade, who has both Hugo and A Dangerous Method; and Alberto Iglesias, who has been nominated twice in the past decade (but has yet to win), who has both Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Skin I Live In. PHOTOS: Oscar Show Moments After those four composers alone are accounted for, there may not be any space left in the category for anyone else! Nobody is saying that Williams or the others should do what Oprah Winfrey did in 2000 -- after racking up 39 Emmys, plus a lifetime achievement award, she withdrew her name from future consideration -- although it's worth noting that that is precisely what composer Hans Zimmer, an eight-time nominee who won for The Lion King (1994), did this year, even though he would have had at nods for four films, Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. But some young composers and publicists with whom I have spoken do feel that it would be fairer -- and make it likelier that newer and/or never-before-nominated talent like Ludovic Bource (The Artist), Cliff Martinez (Drive, Contagion, The Lincoln Lawyer), Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Brian Byrne (Albert Nobbs), David Wingo (Take Shelter), Jonsi (We Bought a Zoo), and Nathan Larson (Margin Call) would receive some attention -- if the Academy adopted the same rule for best original score and other technical categories that it applies to the acting branches. NO TWILIGHT SLUMP! Breaking Dawn Breaking Records: $72M Friday For 3rd Biggest Domestic Opener; $138M Global Total So Far; Happy Feet 2 Disappointing
FRIDAYPM/SATURDAY AM, 6TH UPDATE: Oh sure, you’re too cool (or too male) for the Twilight Saga global phenom. ButSummit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 is shatteringthe four-month-old North Americanbox office slump today and shooting the overall moviegoing weekend up +11% from last year’s total. Hollywood shouldbe grateful tofemales young and old for keeping the business buoyed this weekend now that young males have abandoned indiscriminate moviegoing. (Seriously, give thanks early.) Here isthe Top 10 rundown. Full analysis later: 1. Breaking Dawn Part 1 (Summit) NEW [4,061 Theaters] Friday $72M (including $30.2M midnights), Estimated Weekend $140M Yowza! Summit Entertainment was cautiously optimistic that this fourth Twilight Saga installmentBreaking Dawn Part 1 could match or beat the biggest one-day and Friday opening in the franchise’s history. It didn’t. But it was the #3 best-ever Single Day and Friday opening, behind only Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s $91M and the Twilight Saga New Moon‘s $72.7M. Despite director Bill Condon receiving the worst reviews of the franchise, this pic todayearned a ‘B+’ CinemaScore. Also, the penultimate pic based on Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novelsis off to a great start internationally as it began its roll out in 54 markets around the globe with $66M starting Wednesday through Friday screenings. The global total is now $138M. 2.Happy Feet Two (Warner Bros) NEW [3,606 Theaters] Friday $5.9M, Estimated Weekend $22.5M Given how well family fare is doing at the North American box office these days, the real test for this 3D sequel to George Miller’s beloved 2D toon will be over Thanksgiving weekend. But for now Happy Feet Two is grossingonly half of the 2006 original, which opened to a $12M Friday and $41.5 weekend. “One word: disaster. Despite being in 3D,” a rival studio exec snarked to me tonight. But another noted, “No doubt all the families are waiting until next week to go to the movies.” Pic released on the anniversary of the original and received a ‘B+’ CinemaScore from adiences.Hollywood expected a weekend opening in the high $30sM. Nope. And next week The Muppets movie debuts so more competition for the tots and their parents. On the other hand, singing and dancing CGI penguins are hard to resist. 3. Immortals (Relativity) Week 2 [3,120 Theaters] Friday $3.8M (-74%), Estimated Weekend $13M, Estimated Cume $53.5M That’s a big drop for a 300-clone that underperformed last Friday.Immortals is not the Hail Mary that Relativity hoped it would be. 4. Jack And Jill (Sony) Week 2 [3,438 Theaters] Friday $3.5M (-65%), Estimated Weekend $12.5M, Estimated Cume $41M This Jack And Jill won’t have the usual gazillion multiple of most of Adam Sandler/Happy Madison comedies. 5. Puss In Boots (DreamWorks Animation/Par) Week 4 [3,415 Theaters] Friday $2.5M, Estimated Weekend $12M This toon cat Puss In Boots still has afew more than nine lives left. 6. Tower Heist (Universal) Week 3 [2,942 Theaters] Friday $2.1M, Estimated Weekend $7.2M, EstimatedCume $53.7M 7. J. Edgar (Warner Bros) Week 2 [1,947 Theaters] Friday $1.8M (-57%), Estimated Weekend $6.5M, Estimated Cume 8.Harold & Kumar 3D Xmas (NL/Warner Bros) Week3 [1,808 Theaters] Friday $915K, Estimated Weekend $3M, EstimatedCume $28.3M 9. In Time (Fox) Week3 [2,591 Theaters] Friday $520K, Estimated Weekend $2M, EstimatedCume $33.6M 10. The Descendants (Fox Searchlight) NEW (opened Wed) [29 Theaters] Friday $318K, Estimated Weekend $1M Alexander Payne’s dramedy starring George Clooney had good momentum heading into its opening weekend expansion today into 11 additional markets (including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington DC, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, San Diego, Denver, Minneapolis, and Toronto). Fox Searchlight’s The Descendants had made $79K from Wednesday and Thursday grosses at 5 theaters (2 in NY and 3 in LA). The production budget was $20 million with tax rebates and the Academy Awards talk should help the film perform through March. “This comedy/drama is attracting the over-30 upscale audience who is aware of the terrific reviews we have received,” a Fox Searchlight exec tells me. “And exhibition is very excited about the film after seeing it at the Show East Convention in late October.” On Wednesday before Thanksgiving, The Descendants increases to over 60 markets and about 425 theaters. “We feel the Thanksgiving Holiday is an excellent time to be playing wider as it is counter programming to the 3 wide kids films opening on this date. At Searchlight, we fell it really is a marathon and not a race with our releases.” The initial marketing campaign was launched virally in early May with a web teaser called Who is he? which consisted only of a scene from the film with George Clooney goofily running to his neighbors house to ask – you guessed it – Who is he? Then, at the end of May, Searchlight launched The Descendants trailer on The Tree Of Life linking auteur filmmakers Alexander Payne and Terrence Malick and continued through the summer and into the fall. The film was an audience and critical favorite when it premiered at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival, and the buzz carried over into The Toronto Film Festival. The film went on to play over 15 more festivals including NY and London. Searchlight is now working with various museums and film societies across the county to set Alexander Payne retrospectives and to target urban art house cinefiles initially and eventually upscale suburbanites over Thanksgiving and through December. The project was developed with Ad Hominem, which is Payne’s and writer/producer Jim Taylor’s and producer Jim Burkes production company. (OSCARS: Jim Burke & Jim Taylor Give Birth To Alexander Paynes The Descendants)Stephen Frears was initially attached to direct. When Frears departed, Payne went back to the original book written by Kaui Hart Hemmings and began writing his own adaptation of the screenplay after original drafts were penned by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon. Payne flew to 2009′s Toronto Film Festival to meet with Clooney who was therefor Up In The Air. The Oscar buzz began with the sellouts of the special screenings and tribute to George Clooney atTelluride. FRIDAY 5 PM, 4TH UPDATE: Summit Entertainmentsources tell me that Breaking Dawn Part 1 is softening slightly tonight for a $70 million opening day. So now this fourth Twilight Saga featureis targeting $135M for its debut weekend. That will be the 2nd biggest weekend debut since the studio began making Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novels into films — behind only the Twilight sequel New Moon‘s $142.8M. That’s about halfway between what Summit lowballed and what rival studios highballed Breaking Dawn‘sgrosseswould be. Stay tuned for more updates… FRIDAY 2:30 PM, 3RD UPDATE: Summit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 is shattering Hollywood’s box office slump today. My sources say this fourth film version of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga vampire novels is looking at opening to $72+ million in North American grosses, consisting of $42+M for matinee and evening screenings in 4,061 theaters, plus $30.25M for 12:01 PMpost-midnight showings in 3,521 locations. FRIDAY 9:30 AM, 2ND UPDATE: Critics may be ravaging Summit Entertainment’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 but the fans are loving it. Overnight, thefilm version of the Stephenie Meyer novelmade$30.25M from 12:01 AM post-midnight showingsin a whopping 3,521 theaters. That’s a best for the Twilight Saga franchise (Twilight made 7.5M whichset a record at that time, New Moon $26.3M, and Eclipse $30.1M.) But it alsosets the #2 all-time midnights record behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. FRIDAY 7 AM UPDATE: Here we go again. Not only is Summit Entertainment’sBreaking Dawn Part 1 helping surge the North American box office today after a months-lasting slump. But it’s also a big shot in the arm to international ticket sales. The Twilight Saga film franchise’s fourth installmentrolled out after 12:01 AM into a whopping 3,251 domestic theaters and then expanded into 4,061 theaters by midday. And the film is off to a great start internationally as it started its roll outin 54 markets around the globe with Wednesday screenings from select territories totalling $8.9 million with many more countries, data and their grosses to come over the coming days. I’velearned that an internal Summit Entertainment estimate puts this weekend’s domestic opening of Breaking Dawn Part 1 at $110 million to $125 million. That will be the 2nd biggest weekend debut since the studio began making Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novels into films — behind only the Twilight sequel New Moon. However, rival studios think Summit is lowballing and expect Breaking Dawn to debut to $142+M. And remember this is a female-driven 2D movie. It’s the 3D fanboy-driven movies that have been so hurt by slumping box office of late. Since the franchise began, Twilight opened domestically to $69.6M in 2008, New Moon to $142.8M in 2009, Eclipse to $64.8M in 2010. Summitprojected in an investor prospectus obtained by every showbiz media outlet that it would make $228 profit from Breaking Dawn, and that the final back to back films in the franchise would generate more than $1.2 billion in revenues and $447 million in profits for the studio and its investors. Yowza! Also rolling out this weekend into 3,606 theaters, with 2,800 3D screens,is Warner Bros family fare Happy Feet Two. The sequel also from director George Miller is releasing on the anniversary of the original, which grossed$41.5M in 2D on November 17 of 2006. “This Happy Feet Two feels like it will have to work to get to that figure despite being in 3D,” a rival studio exec tells me. Hollywood expects a weekend opening in the high $30sM which is good enough in these slumping times. “The strong schedule offamily films this past summer gave us an ideal launch for the campaign, startingwith a teaser trailer on Kung Fu Panda on Memorial Day weekend, and playingthrough on films ranging from Harry Potter to Smurfs, with the main trailerdebuting in the fall, culminating with a placement on Puss In Boots,” a Warner Bros exec tells me. Already, domestic pre-sales show thatBreaking Dawn Part 1 hasjumped onto MovieTickets.com’s highest advance seller list, ranking 5th among the Top 5 — ahead of The Twilight Saga’s last installment Eclipse but behind Harry PotterAnd The Deathly Hallows Part 1. In anticipation of the increased sales for Breaking Dawn‘s release,MovieTickets.com said it grew its theatre chain group count to 244 this week, and now sells tickets for over 17,400 movie screens.) Joel Cohen, CEO of MovieTickets.com, stated, The success of The Twilight Saga and the trends we saw from advance ticket sales of the most recent film is phenomenal. The fans who have supported this franchise from the beginning show no signs of walking away from what we know will continue to be a record-breaking movie going event. The net production budget for Breaking Dawn Part 1, after tax rebates and such,is $110 million. Costs were held down because parts 1 and 2 were made back-to-back by Summit. But the director of both pictures,Bill Condon,is not receiving anywhere near the generally good reviews of the previous Twilight Saga movies. Overseas, the Twilight Saga films have grossed over $1 billion coming into this latest release. Twilight grossed $200M, New Moon more than doubled its predecessor with $416M, and Eclipse is just shy of crossing the $400M mark. The breakdown of territories releasing this weekend is as follows: Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Argentina, Bahrain, Bolivia, Chile, CIS, Croatia, Czech, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Peru, Portugal, Qatar, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, UAE, Ukraine, Aruba, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, Uruguay, Venezuela, West Indies, UK. Twilight Fans Already Lining Up For Breaking Dawn Premiere) On Wednesday,Breaking Dawn Part 1 opened #1 in France grossing $3.83M for its opening day.The film dethroned the highly popular French comedy Intouchables ahead also of the hugely popular Tintin 3D. It is the third highest opening result for this year in France.Summit said the film is performing very well across the country in all provinces, and first screenings at the Le Grand Rex theater in Paris was sold out. Turning 40 appears the warmth on thesps, IMdB
A friend loves to proclaim that "age may be the great democracy." In the centre years, that's concerning the most soothing factor you are able to say. Their motion states, "With no factual support, Complaintant helps make the uncommon assertion that her date of birth might be acquired from no source apart from her charge card data which therefore, it is her belief that Accused acquired her date of birth using her charge card information. (Further, Complaintant doesn't have legal privacy curiosity about her birth date, which she appreciates was a part of public record information, and then the alleged actions weren't illegal.)" However it does nothing to assuage the numerous entertainers, particularly stars, who're facing the large 4-. Individuals who've managed to get large already find it difficult to find roles, even when they appear much more youthful, but it is most likely especially pronounced for that a lot more ambitious stars who're still awaiting their life's investment to repay. For individuals 50 plus, no way. These well-established complaints over ageism in the market required a fascinating turn lately when an unknown actress filed a $a million suit in Dallas against Amazon . com and it is subsidiary, IMDB, declaring the showbiz credits site used her legal title, address and Zipcode that they provided when she activated to IMDBPro to glean details about her birthdate, that they released on her behalf profile without her permission. Soon after the suit was filed, the Screen Stars Guild and also the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists continued the attack against IMDB because they press the website to limit the utilization old information, stating that for a lot of entertainers, "when their actual age range then become recognized to casting personnel, the ten+ year age groups that most of them can portray all of a sudden reduces, and thus do their possibilities to operate.Inch They stated that IMDB were built with a "moral and legal obligation" to not facilitate age discrimination in employment. The unknown actress, instead of attempt to overcome the apparent First Amendment concerns (in her own situation IMDB is posting accurate information obtainable in public record information), is going after numerous claims, including breach of contract, fraud and, most provocatively, breach of Washington's privacy act. Privacy is simply the one thing to stir emotion and support, as congress progressively turn their focus on the insightful information held by Internet firms. "Within the entertainment industry, youth rules,Inch the actress' suit states. "If your are perceived as being 'over-the-hill,' i.e. approaching 40, it's extremely difficult to have an up-and-coming actress." On Wednesday, Amazon . com filed a motion for dismissal, quarrelling not just that her suit depended on "pure speculation" over the way it used the data that they gave, but that they under your own accord provided the information "to be used in line with her contracts with IMDb.com." For the charge they "deliberately intercepted and recorded" her information to make use of that date for "illegal reasons" in breach of Washington's privacy act, Amazon . com highlights that they gave her consent. Even when IMBD used her customer information to locate her birth date, which use fell inside the customer agreement. She'd "no expectation of privacy," Amazon . com states, because the information she claims she meant to keep private in the site, "she sent directly" for them. SAG's concentrate on IMDB unquestionably helps drive focus on age discrimination, but it is a large question regarding what lengths the suit will go and which kind of legal claim SAG or AFTRA might have. Alan Brunswick, partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, stated that certain factor to bear in mind is the fact that age discrimination laws and regulations "are usually made to prevent discrimination against folks 40 and older." He added that "because IMDB doesn't have contractual relationship with SAG, I do not think they've any legal obligation to adhere to SAG's demands, not to mention the requirements.Inch
But even when the guilds could forge some agreement with IMDB, age information could be harder to gain access to, however it would not be impossible to locate. Later on, the vexing factor for middle-aged entertainers isn't likely to become IMBD but the things they published on social networking sites like Twitter and facebook once they were youthful, prior to they can had acting aspirations. Quite simply, it will be ever harder to delink out of your past. Not too it had been ever that simple. About about ten years ago, employed by TV Guide, I needed to profile an actress approaching his middle years. Anxious to prove he was 38, he went to date regarding show me his license to prove it. The storyline went using the age and, affirmed, I acquired instructions in one of his senior high school class mates, wondering how this fellow alum had remained so youthful. The question of box office versus. profitability, the changing landscape of film financing as well as the frustration that bizzers have while using media's focus on opening weekend performance were among the subjects parsed Tuesday at Variety's Way ahead for Film Summit. Box office isn't any more the key aspect in determining a film's overall success, Relativity Media topper Ryan Kavanaugh saidflatly inside the opening sesh in the confab, held at Hollywood and Highland's Annex Space. Other bizzers were also critical in the media's intense scrutiny from the film's opening weekend perf. "When art galleries were first created inside the 20's and '30s, anything you had was box office," Kavanaugh mentioned. "Anything you required to group of, and many types of you possessed to evaluate on was el born area office. The practical the simple truth is -- box office is 20% in the cake which is somewhat irrelevant." Kavanaugh, who spoke to Variety's Peter Caranicas inside the keynote address within the confab co-produced with Digital Media Wire, pointed to inadequacies in transparency inside the film financing world. Watching the decline work from home video revenue, the economy, as well as the new kinds of film financing, Kavanaugh mentioned that bizzers will want to look beyond the box office to really gauge a film's performance. Tax incentives and output deals -- the 2nd which Kavanaugh states Relativity has in many but three major areas -- help mitigate that risk. Relativity tries to have three-quarters from the film's risk covered just before it starting production, he mentioned. Kavanaugh also noted that needing to pay creative talent scale -- rather than gross participation -- can be quite convenient. He noted that was the tack Relativity needed with helmer Steven Soderbergh round the approaching pic "Haywire." "Our motto from the very first day was always that the idea of gross participation don't appear sensible,Inch Kavanaugh mentioned. "As well as the reason they don't appear sensible is always that you're basically saying, 'Even essentially generate deficits I'm likely to spend an additional benefit.A And there's not one other business that individuals could find that does that." "The media focuses on the weekend box office way too considerably," mentioned Ron Nicita, co-chairman and COO of Morgan Creek Prods. "A movie might be observed in many ways.Inch Endgame Entertainment Boss Jim Stern echoed Nicita's sentiment. "It's being in regards to the profits, it is not relevant for this constant equine race," mentioned Endgame Entertainment Boss Jim Stern through the panel moderated by Variety editor in chief Timothy M. Gray. "In the event you enter the film plus you've got just a little exposure as well as the film does $Thirty Dollars million, you own an enormous success. We don't look at the performance of Chrysler by gross revenue, we base it on profit." Stern and Nicita, along with panelists David Glasser, chief operating officer in the Weinstein Co., and Mark Sourian, co-prexy of production for DreamWorks Art galleries, contended that bizzers need to re-think the categorization more sensible artists -- especially if they were created for an expense. "They managed to get happen with 'Insidious" and 'Paranormal' there's been some very smart cost points," Glasser mentioned. "Dimension, for any very long time, can make movies for $ten million or $12 million dollars which we all do $Thirty Dollars million box office we're experimenting work high-fiving each other." These smaller sized budgets, combined while using current economic climate and new digital revenue streams, are adding to have an elevated readiness within the art galleries towards the opportunity to purchase smaller sized photos. "Without people organizations, art galleries will probably make much less movies," Sourian mentioned. Bankers and equity players mentioned they're keeping close track of all of the new changes inside the biz, specifically the shifting moviegoing habits in the youthful auds that drive many of the B.O. "I have got a 16-year-old boy, and that he will the family room while using large TV and gambling console," mentioned Christa Thomas, controlling director and senior film consultant, sports and entertainment group with SunTrust Bank. "He and also the pals start after school on Friday and they're there all weekend." All people options, coupled with recession and decline in traditional homevideo revenue, has spurred the exodus of banks and equity concerns within the film financing market -- many of which has only started to trickle in. Banks, for example, have began assisting to release up their purse strings for top kinds of deals. "I believe that it is a great time for bank financing for many companies, for businesses that hold the right elements," Thomas mentioned. The entire story, however, finally emerged throughout the six-week trial. It had been the storyplot of the tormented genius around the edge of the items may have been his finest triumph with one impediment waiting in his way extreme insomnia. Testimony originated from medical professionals, household employees and Murrays former female friends, amongst others. Probably the most shocking moments, however, came when prosecutors displayed a sizable picture of Jacksons gaunt, lifeless body on the hospital gurney and performed the seem of his drugged, slurred voice, as recorded by Murray just days prior to the performers dying. Jackson spoken about plans for any fantastic kids hospital and the hope of cementing a legacy bigger compared to Elvis or even the Beatles. Through the trial, Jackson family people viewed in the spectator gallery, fans collected outdoors with signs and T-t shirts demanding, Justice for Michael, as well as an worldwide press corps broadcast reviews all over the world. The trial was public and streamed on the web. Prosecutors described Murray being an incompetent physician who used the anesthetic propofol without sufficient safeguards and whose neglect left Jackson abandoned because he lay dying. Murrays lawyers searched for to exhibit the physician would be a medical angel of whim with former patients vouching for his abilities. Murray told police in the start he gave Jackson propofol along with other sedative drugs because the star battled for sleep to organize for his shows. However the physician stated he given merely a small dose at the time Jackson died. Lawyers for Murray along with a defense expert blamed Jackson for their own dying, saying the singer gave themself the fatal dose of propofol while Murray wasnt watching. A prosecution expert stated that theory was crazy. Murray stated he'd created a detailed friendship with Jackson, never designed to harm him and couldnt explain why he died. The conditions of Jacksons dying at 50 years old were as bizarre every chapter within the celebrities sensational existence story. Jackson was discovered not inhaling their own mattress in the leased mansion after being dosed intravenously with propofol, a drug normally given in hospitals throughout surgery. The coroner ruled the situation a homicide and also the blame would fall towards the last individual who saw Jackson alive Murray, who was simply hired to look after the singer because the comeback concerts neared. Craving sleep, Jackson had looked for any physician who'd provide him the intravenous anesthetic that Jackson known as his milk and thought to become his salvation. Other doctors switched him lower, based on trial testimony. Murray threw in the towel his practices in Houston and Vegas and agreed for traveling Jackson and act as his personal physician indefinitely. For six days, as Jackson began strenuous rehearsals, Murray implanted him with propofol every evening, the physician told police. He later attempted to wean Jackson in the drug while he feared he was becoming addicted. Jackson planned to pay for Murray $150,000 per month to have an extended tour in Europe. Ultimately, the physician never was compensated a cent because Jackson died prior to signing anything. Throughout the final 24 hrs of his existence, Jackson sang and danced in a spirited testing, reveling within the adulation of fans who welcomed him outdoors. Then came a evening of horror, chasing after sleep probably the most elusive treasure the uniform performer couldn't buy. Testimony demonstrated Murray gave Jackson intravenous doses that evening from the sedative drugs lorazepam and midazolam. Jackson also required a Valium pill. But nothing appeared to create sleep. Finally, Murray told police, he gave the singer a little dose of propofol 25 mg that appeared to place him to rest. The physician stated he felt it had been safe to depart his patients bedroom for any couple of minutes, but Jackson wasn't breathing when he came back. Witnesses stated he was probably dead at that time. What went down next was dependent on dispute throughout the trial. Security and household staff referred to Murray as panicked, never calling 911 but attempting to give Jackson CPR on his mattress rather than the firm floor. A guard stated Murray was worried about packing up and hiding medicine bottles and IV equipment before telling him to call 911. Prosecutors stated Murray was distracted while Jackson was sedated, stating Murrays mobile phone records to exhibit he earned numerous calls. Government bodies never accused Murray of planning to get rid of the star, also it required eight several weeks to allow them to file the involuntary wrongful death charge against him. It had been the cheapest possible criminal offence charge including a homicide. There is no law against giving propofol or even the other sedative drugs. But prosecution expert witnesses stated Murray was acting well beneath the standard of care needed of the physician. They stated using propofol in the home setting without lifesaving equipment available was an egregious deviation from that standard. They known as it gross negligence, the legal grounds for an involuntary wrongful death charge. The defense team countered using its own expert who presented information recommending that Jackson gave themself the fatal dose. In conclusion arguments, the district attorney stated the mystery of the items happened behind the closed doorways of Jacksons bed room around the fatal day most likely would not be solved. Morning Grind: Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens Might Have To Go on 'Spring' Break With James Franco
Since the latest Harmony Korine movie is not crazy enough, Variety reviews that Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens have been in discussions to become listed on Emma Roberts and James Franco in 'Spring Breakers.' The film follows several young women who're arrested after slowly destroying a quick food restaurant to obtain money for his or her springbreak plans Franco plays the shady drug dealer who bails them out and convinces these to murder his rival. That can be a seems like a significant change of pace for somebody like Gomez, Variety reviews that Justin Bieber's spouse will have a spiritual girl who's not inclined to find thrills like her buddies. Anyway, this really is cuckoo bananas and can hopefully really happen. Pause here to look at Gomez tear up "Super Bass," simply because. [Variety] Albert Brooks gets some much-deserved Oscar buzz for his killer (ding!) performance in 'Drive,' as well as in a brand new interview with Collider he discloses just the number of other meaty roles he almost performed through the years. "I switched lower a lot of parts. I could not even start to let you know. 'Dead Poets Society' and 'Big' and 'Pretty Lady.' One part which i really desired to play, and that i is at pre-manufacture of my very own movie, simply because I figured I needed to utilize Paul [Thomas Anderson] was the part that Burt Reynolds got in 'Boogie Nights.' I loved that whole ensemble. After I read that script, I truly loved it. However I could not stop, I could not shut lower things i was doing. But, regrets are stupid they do not mean anything plus they don't equal to anything." No regrets, but: Albert Brooks in 'Boogie Nights' could have been amazing. We Need To Talk About Kevin Wins At LFF
Lynne Ramsay's drama takes Best Film The 55th BFI London Film Festival - or 'L Double F' as no-one calls it - has had another auspicious year. Filmmakers of the stature of David Cronenberg, Alexander Payne, Lynne Ramsay andFernando Meirelles showed off their wares, big name actors graced the red-carpet with their Earth-healing presences and George Clooney, bless him, did both. Plus no-one fell into that giant hole in the middle of Leicester Square, which is a bonus. But, like Highlander on sportsday, there can be only one winner. The votes are in and Ramsay's highly-acclaimed We Need To Talk About Kevin has come away with the festival's Best Film award. John Madden, LFFjury chair, described it as "a sublime, uncompromising tale of the torment that can stand in the place of love".It seems like a solid shout - only The Artist and Shame have come close to the critical plaudits showered on Ramsay and her cast - and it's great to see the talented Scot, director of powerful films like Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar, getting the recognition she deserves. Also walking away with gongs were Candese Reid, winner of Best British Newcomer for her turn in Tinge Krishnan's singeing social drama Junkhearts, and Las Acacias director Pablo Giorgelli who collected the Sutherland debut feature award. Eddie Murphy Eddie Murphy is quashing any about a Beverly Hillsides Cop IV, but states a TV version from the popular eighties comedy franchise is incorporated in the works. I'd perform the pilot, appear in some places,Inch Murphy, who performed mischievous cop Axel within the original films, informs Moving Stone. "No movie scripts were right it had been attempting to pressure the premise. If you need to pressure something, you should not do it. It had been always a rehash from the old factor. It had been always wrong." Also this is not on Murphy's future film docket? Family movies. After many years of starring in kid-friendly fare like Haunted Mansion and Dad Daycare, the 50-year-old actor feels his times of playing towards the PG crowd are behind him. "I haven't any interest for the reason that at this time. There is no blueprint, but I am attempting to perform some edgy stuff. And That I simply want to do things i actually want to do, otherwise I am content to sit down here and play my guitar all day long," he states. "I usually tell people since I am a semiretired gentleman of leisure, and from time to time I'll go perform some try to break the monotony up." Eddie Murphy to host the Academy awards Rather, Murphy states he's considered coming back to face-up following a a lot more than 20-year hiatus. It's like, if this hits me, I'll get it done, eventually." Although he remaisn unclear about whether he'll really go back to stand-up, Murphy can get some good practice when he hosts the 84th Oscars the coming year. Murphy is excited for that gig if perhaps to prove he isn't upset over losing the 2006 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award to Alan Arkin. Reviews at that time stated Murphy stormed from the ceremony soon after his title wasn't known as. "What went down was once i lost, I am just chilling, and that i was sitting alongside Beyoncé's jumps, and that he sways over and grabs me and it is like, [solemn voice] 'There is going to be in other cases.' And you feel [Steven] Spielberg in your shoulder going, 'It's okay, guy.' Then Clint Eastwood walks by: 'Hey, guy&thinsp.&thinsp.&thinsp.&thinsp' And So I was like, 'It's not really this evening!,'" he states. "I did not have sour grapes whatsoever. Universal decided on offering 'Tower Heist' for $60 on premium VOD, just three days following the pic's November. 4 release. Universal has place the brakes on its intend to bow Brett Ratner's "Tower Heist" on PVOD three days after its theatrical release, in reaction to exhibitors' risks of the boycott. The experiment might have permitted Comcast digital customers in Tigard and Atlanta to rent "Tower Heist" when needed for $60 within the Thanksgiving holiday, just three days following the caper, starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, opened up wide on November 4.Cinemark, which controls about 10% of domestic screens, rapidly responded by saying it wouldn't show the film in the theaters countrywide. The One
A TLA release of a Fox Meadow Films production. Produced by Michael Billy, Aimee Denaro, Caytha Jentis. Executive producer, Nancie Ellis. Co-producer, Verne Mattson. Directed, written by Caytha Jentis. With: Jon Prescott, Ian Novick, Margaret Anne Florence, Natalya Rudakova, Kelly Coffield Park, Christopher Cass, Pierce Forsythe, Michael Emery, Michael Billy. The course of true love is anything but smooth -- more like unconvincing, erratic and unresolved -- in "The One." Tracing a smitten gay man's pursuit of a straight(-laced) crush object, pic makes that quest seem more creepy than charming; some other curious elements likewise play as less than fully intentional, despite the bland overall tenor. Following gay fest travel, Caytha Jentis' indie romance is debuting theatrically Oct. 7 at Gotham's Quad Cinema. Disc and VOD release Oct. 18 will reach the usual niche viewers while reminding them that too many gay-interest titles in their rental queue end up being disappointing time-killers. Improbable aspiring corporate lawyer Tommy (Ian Novick) is introduced bragging to the requisite queeny best friend (producer Michael Billy) about last night's conquest of a hunky heterosexual who was a "gay virgin." Despite all signs of this being just another notch in his belt, Tommy vows that this time, it's really love. However, since his subsequent attempts to woo Daniel (Jon Prescott) rely heavily on lies and manipulation, it's questionable just how deep Tommy's feelings run, let alone whether we should be rooting for him. Discomfited by this one-night stand, and protesting that he'd never do anything to risk the life he's planned with fiancee Jen (Margaret Anne Florence), Daniel distances himself from Tommy. Tommy responds by joining his target's gym, befriending Jen, coercing Daniel into an ersatz "college reunion" weekend and otherwise acting like a stalker. It doesn't seem to occur to writer-helmer Jentis that in the real world, such tactics would come with a big red flag, leaving thesp Novick straining to be likable as a character whose shallowness and deceit the movie shrugs off as amusing quirks. Meanwhile, Daniel is painted as an earnest yuppie dreamboat with a stereotypical background in country-club golf courses, polo-shirted best friends cracking gay jokes at his bachelor party, etc. Eventually, he confesses to loving Tommy in return, but that seems a function of formula rather than emotional logic. "The One" later defies both formula and logic by setting up the expected fadeout, then withholding it arbitrarily, necessitating a make-do close that doesn't work at all. (Adding to the mystery, an opening-credits montage provides glimpses of a happy couple at odds with the subsequent narrative.) In another strange decision, the pic starts out with Tommy as narrator (a device soon dropped), though by the end, he's barely present and Daniel has become our p.o.v. Elsewhere, awkward transitions, some far-fetched behavior and occasional scenes that peter out pointlessly suggest elements possibly lost or abandoned between conception and final edit. Unfortunately, the uninspired, frequently flat dialogue sounds as though it survived intact. Result is romantic-dramedy Swiss cheese -- mildly palatable, yet riddled with holes. Perfs and packaging are adequate.Camera (color, HD), Ben Wolf; editor, Verne Mattson; music, Kenneth Lampl; production designer, Katherine Whitehead; sound, Ivanhoe Gadpaille; sound designer, Louis Milgrom; assistant director, Darien Sills-Evans; casting, Adrienne Stern. Zeiler: Euro nets wary of Hulu
CAMBRIDGE -- Hulu, the U.S. online service backed by NBC, Fox and ABC, is unlikely to ever sign a partnership deal with a European broadcaster. This is according to RTL Group CEO Gerhard Zeiler, speaking at the Royal Television Society's Cambridge Convention, on Thursday, in a session that looked at the threats and opportunities presented by Internet-enabled TV. He revealed that negotiations to form joint ventures with Hulu collapsed because European webs were not prepared to allow Hulu to generate advertising revenue around their shows.Zeiler said: "We love to work with aggregators, but there are two conditions -- we have to sell our own advertising, and we won't sell individual programs to aggregators. " The RTL topper recalled how in 2009 Hulu was confident it would roll out its service within 12 months in the U.K., France and Germany. They didn't do any deals because all the broadcasters said the same thing -- we don't want Hulu to change our Euros into Cents or our Pounds into Pence," said Zeiler. He stressed that European networks were determined to maintain control of their own channel brands and to continue selling their own airtime. In the U.K. ITV is understood to have held talks with Hulu. With catch-up services now widespread in territories such as the U.K. thanks to the BBC iPlayer and ITV.com European broadcasters believe that Hulu has missed its chance this side of the Atlantic. In the same Cambridge session in which Zeiler made his remarks about Hulu, Virgin Media's chief operating officer Richard Halton said that his company would generate one billion video-on-demand views this year in the U.K. Time shifting, more accurately individual viewing, is exploding," said Halton. Weekend Receipts: Contagion Fever -- Catch It!
Hark, a brand new film hath unseated The Assistance for that #1 crown! All it required was Steven Soderbergh’s hypochondria-inducing Contagion, an image which will surely also boost worldwide sales of Purell throughout flu season. Even though there’s no love lost in seeing a week ago’s Shark Evening three dimensional and Apollo 18 drop precipitously lower within the ranks, the heartstrings pull for Warrior, a carefully behaved MMA film that only got a small fraction of the theater count of their rivals, and carried out accordingly. But! A minimum of it worked out much better than Bucky Larson… 1. Contagion Gross: $23,135,000 ($23,135,000) Screens: 3,222 (PSA: $7,180) Days: 1 Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion drawn on into an elemental fascination one of the American public: Paranoia. (As well as on the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, believe it or not.) What it really offered audiences, just like The Assistance, appears to indicate a vital change within the movie schedule — summer time has ended, also it’s time for additional serious, grown-up fare in the box office. It remains to appear when the pandemic thriller’s reign could keep distributing within the coming days, but because of the competition it’s got a high probability of holding #1 until Moneyball and Abduction go into the charts. 2. The Assistance Gross: Eight Dollars,691,000 ($137,093,000) Screens: 2,935 (PSA: Two Dollars,961) Days: 5 (change: - 40.five percent) It required a cast of the-listers along with a global pandemic to unseat Tate Taylor’s The Assistance after its unpredicted reign at #1, but nonetheless: at $137M and counting, it’s the sleeper hit of the season. Expect the domestic drama to help keep hanging out the very best 10 for some time. 3. Warrior Gross: Five Dollars,607,000 (new) Screens: 1,869 (PSA: Three Dollars,000) Days: 1 It’s unfortunate Lionsgate didn’t open their Tom Sturdy-Joel Edgerton MMA drama in not only 1,869 theaters, since this is a movie much more potent than its logline indicates. Though their stars are increasing, leads Sturdy and Edgerton continue to be unknown to a lot of and also at $5.6M, the Gavin O’Connor-directed sports drama fell shorter than expected in the box office. That could make Warrior’s lengthy-shot honours season hopes even longer, but doesn’t everybody prefer to root for that underdog? 4. Your Debt Gross: $ 4,905,000 ($21,993,000) Screens: 1,874 (PSA: Two Dollars,617) Days: 2 (change: - 50.five percent) Despite star Helen Mirren or more-and-comers Mike Worthington and Jessica Chastain about the marquee, John Madden’s Mossad action-thriller experienced from middling reviews as well as less passionate person to person, despite getting its moments. This doesn’t bode well for Texas Killing Fields, the October pic that reunites Worthington and Chastain… 5. Colombiana Gross: $4,000,000 ($29,779,000) Screens: 2,354 (PSA: $1,699) Days: 3 (change: -46.4%) Zoe Saldana’s action heroine turn is waiting on hold relatively well, getting made it much better than, say, Shark Evening three dimensional or Apollo 18. Credit producer/co-author Luc Besson for consistently delivering the type of muscular, sexy action that audiences love — as well as for giving Avatar star Saldana an properly slinky, tough leading role. May she hang on within the top ten, guns blazing, as Hay Dogs, Drive, Abduction, and Killer Elite blast their distance to the genre pool within the coming days. — 13. Laugh inside my Discomfort Gross: $2,000,000 (new) Screens: 97 (PSA: $20,619) Days: 1 The actual success story from the weekend? Comedian Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy special Laugh inside my Discomfort, which gained an amazing $20K per-screen average on just 97 screens within an exclusive run via AMC Theaters and built person to person largely through social networking. Meanwhile… 15. Bucky Larson: Born to become a Star Gross: $1,450,000 (new) Screens: 1,500 (PSA: $967) Days: 1 Nick Swardson’s star turn like a buck-toothed aspirant porn ingnue, shockingly, didn't even crack the very best 10. Maybe everybody required Movieline guest rater Joanna Angel’s advice and made the decision to hold back for Netflix. [Amounts via Box Office Guru]
